The wind doth blow...

Well, yes it did. And from the northwest, bringing with it a complete change of season. Surely an end to our summer monsoon breezes from the south. But now that I think it over, I really do not know which direction the wind comes from. I know the direction the weather comes from, thanks to Wunderground and NOAA and weather.com.

But I never did learn quite how to read a weather vane and I should -- I have three perfectly good ones in my neighborhood. That would settle the matter of wind direction.

Eagle, angel and scottie -- an curious mix of symbols, isn't it? Nation, religion, home-and-hearth. No doubt there are more weather vanes in the city if I just go looking in the right places, say Mt. Vernon or Pleasant Street. I'll just do that -- one of these days, when the wind isn't bringing weather with it.

Later: My headline is not quite correct; here is the verse as I learned it at my mother's knee (and forgot parts over the years):

The North wind doth blow and we shall have snow,
And what will poor robin do then, poor thing?
He'll sit in a barn and keep himself warm
and hide his head under his wing, poor thing.

Cooler weather for you. Cold weather for us. It is that time of the year.

I love the Scottie Dog! And, Wunderground.com is an awesome weather site.

We got rain here yesterday, it's getting cooler, and it looks like another storm today. We'll see.

I have mixed feelings, since I'm a summer lover, no matter how hot it gets.

  3. steve -- you would be in the Bavarian Alps, no? I can believe in your cold.

anon av -- what I like about Wunderground are 1) the photographs and 2) the long list of individual local weather stations that enable one to pinpoint just where the weather is happening.

  4. My English born Grandmother used to quote that verse. But of course, we lived in the Southern Hemisphere, & there are no Robins in New Zealand!

  5. meggie -- I was always rather surprised to find that there are robins in Arizona, but they're all over the place, Phoenix as well as up here in the mountains. We definitely did not have robins in Jax Florida.
