Why not? Friends think I'm strange or, if they're trying to flatter me, daring, all because I occasionally like a slice of pie for breakfast. My question is simply: where is it mandated that eggs, cereal, or bacon are Breakfast Foods to be eaten only first thing in the morning, while pie is a Dessert to be consumed only after stuffing oneself on Thanksgiving turkey (or meat loaf on an ordinary weekday night)?
Look at it this way: a generous helping of boysenberry pie at Coco's or rhubarb pie at Berry's is a fine wake-up food. Fruit (well, sort of, in the case of rhubarb) plus the crust for a carb. Really gets me going!
What's more, I'm happy to be served carefully scrambled eggs* with LOTS of bacon for supper. Mom did just that when I was a kid and the school lunch ladies have long since discovered that their charges get a big kick out of "breakfast for lunch days".
While I'm on the subject of us Americans and our food weirdnesses, let me pass along the anthropologists' method of determining which are our countrymen at an international conference banquet. Wait for the dessert course; if it's pie, you will note that only Americans carefully turn the pie so that they can eat it point first; all other folks start right in on the pie however it landed.
*Carefully scrambled means done s-l-o-w-l-y over a low flame, a la Nero Wolf.
Here i am trying to knock off a few excess kilos and you tempt me with pies-galore. How krewel.

Hey, doesn't everyone eat pie for breakfast on occasion? I do.
ReplyDeleteI'll gladly admit to eating pie for breakfast (or any other time of the day) when there is some sitting in the fridge.
ReplyDeletebro -- sorry, old buddy -- I didn't mean to ruin your careful diet.
ReplyDeletesteve -- so is it just nutritional busy-bodies that keep the mythology going?
tombo -- I'll bet it doesn't last long at that rate. My only method of stretching a pie out over several days is buy the frozen kind that you struggle to cut one piece off of...
Hey - pie has fruit, eggs, grain, dairy - what's up here? If it were chocolate pie, it would even have the veggies covered! *winks*
ReplyDeleteframe -- actualy, my preferred breakfast pie would be a fruit pie, which probably doesn't have the eggs, but then those are for supper, right?
ReplyDeleteYum, pie is good any old time!
ReplyDeleteNo way! I didn't know that about us Americans and our pointy-pie fetish. LOL
ReplyDeleteWe also give ourselves away when in Europe by eating with our forks in our right hand instead of our left hand.
~Anon in AV.
jarart -- I tend to agree with that sentiment, especially if it's the right kind of pie.
ReplyDeleteanon av -- just take a look the next time pie is served all around (tho I think that American servers are likely to point the pie in the right direction in the first place.
