Friend Bobbi recently sent me a couple of pictures taken over Skull Valley way.
I'm posting 'em as a reminder of Prescott's recent past, when we were a western town year round, not just the week of rodeo. Our small town has evolved into a more sophisticated city, but we lost somethig on the way. Thanks for the reminder, Bobbi, that there are still ranches, cattle, and cowboys out there in the hinterlands.
Linkables: Speaking of a more innocent past, the current Smithsonian Magazine has a fascinating article about Charles Atlas whose mission (and business) in life was turning 97-pound weaklings into real muscle-bound He-Men. And here's a comic just for me -- and other bloggers like me who are always on the lookout for new material.
Nothing beats an Arizona cowboy! Have you made it to the Arizona Cowboy Poetry readings yet?
ReplyDeleteqd -- aren't the readings this weekend? I was just checking the calendar in the Courier & that's what it said...
ReplyDeleteThis made me smile!
ReplyDeletekaren -- when I consider the changes since moving here, I don't know whether to smile (at the shopping and good food) or to cry at what's been lost.
ReplyDeleteI love horses, cows, too, but do not approve of rodeos :(
ReplyDeleteThe Rodeo, to me, is sanctioned animal abuse...
However! In spite of that dark comment I just wanted you to know that seeing these photos inspired me to brave the heat and head to the stables where I turned on the hose and gave the horses a nice, cool bath. Did you know that horses drink from the hose? Well, maybe not all horses but mine does...
Granny J,
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos and glad you and Bobbi shared these.
I'm guessing those are lovely quarter horses, the pride of the American West. ;-)
Skull Valley... sigh. I'm hearing subdivision rumors about SK and Kirkland.
Say it ain't so, Joe.
~Anon in AV.
kate -- having only seen part of one rodeo in my whole life, I can't comment on your comment... on the other hand, it sounds like you have a fine relationship with a fine horse.
ReplyDeleteanon av -- there's been one subdivision on the desert side of Skull Valley for a long time -- I haven't heard of subdivision plans lately for SV or Kirkland. Of course, the huge Ruger Ranch subdivision probably uses the Kirkland post office. Maybe Bobbi has heard...Bobbi???
