Cemetery project: Del Rio
Actually, this is by way of introduction to a project that I and a buddy are considering. The picture was lent to me by another friend who's part of a project to locate the bounds of the small graveyard on private land just north of Chino Valley. According to Bobbi, the CV Historical Society is going to Del Rio Ranch, site of the first provisional capitol of the AZ Territory. We are going to try to find the perimeter of the graveyard and mark it so we can eventually fence it and keep the cows off it. There are only 3 graves marked and there are 67 names on record. (Perhaps cows will be the least of their worries, as I understand that the town of CV has reached an agreement that will allow development of at least some of the Del Rio property.) But back to the subject matter: friend Andy and I are going to locate and photograph a few of the Prescott area cemeteries, starting with the IOOF grounds.
Sounds like a great project. Keep us in the loop please.
ReplyDeleteDitto what Barney said.
ReplyDeleteThe Del Rio "improvements" should, I hope, preserve AZ history.
It would behoove the developers to think that way... unlike Young's Farm.
Sigh.
~Anon in AV.
barney -- I'll try to keep up on what's going to happen at Del Rio & let folks know...
ReplyDeleteanon av -- I'm most concerned about the wetlands and the heronry in that nearby row of ancient cottonwoods.
Interesting project. Looking forward to reading about it. And, looking at a few pics.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great project. I wish you well.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great project, lots of fun and for a worthy cause. We need to save something of our history from the developers.
ReplyDeleteCemeteries everywhere are varied and interesting places - there are lots of Flickr groups devoted to them!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy cemetery pics. Good luck with the project.
ReplyDeletesteve -- actually, it is a continuation; I've already blogged the Citizens Cemetery and Rolling Hills here in Prescott and the old cemetery down in Skull Valley.
ReplyDeletejarart -- thanks. I'm looking forward to getting out again!
jeanw -- fie on any of those folk or organizations that try to sever links to the past...
lucy -- I've already discovered some coverage of local cemeteries at Flickr.
decker -- keep coming back then as we work on the project!
Developers cannot build ON cemeteries, that's why it's so important to identify and mark the complete perimeter of these obscure graves and cemeteries.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea - looking forward to more info and pictures!
ReplyDeletelady -- thanks for that info...
ReplyDeleteframe -- IOOF will be coming up soon. Pix are taken...
