...a perfect recipe for collecting reflections. It's been maybe two weeks since the last of our Winter Weather -- and 8 days since I spied trees and telephone poles on the other side of the surface of the remaining water on one of the local alleys.
How could I resist clicking the shutter?
But here's a puzzle for you: in the picture above, the reflections are out of focus but the alley surface is sharp, whereas in the picture below, exactly the opposite is true, at least in part. I wonder just how that happened.
But then, I love small mysteries as well as surprises.

About the focusing issue: your camera probably has a little rectangle in the center, and focuses on whatever is there.
So if you lock the focus on the reflected object, which is at infinity, the foreground would be out of focus.
rv-b-e is correct, GJ. Sometimes I think I've locked focus on a certain object, but the result shows otherwise...and, can be quite interesting and fun to see!
~Anon in AV.
Nice photos GJ!!
I love the contrast of the blue sky with the mud. Very inspirational!
Even with the rectangle on what you think you want to focus on, it will sometimes fool you. Cameras need a short time to adjust to it and at times I take the shot too quick and it ends up out of focus. Another three weeks and there might not be a water hole left.
Nice pix! I love that there's been enough precipitation to form lasting puddles:)
boonie -- is the entire reflected object at infinity or just the sky? I should think that the tree, for example, would be at 2x the distance in the air...
anon av -- happens to me, too!
tombo -- well, since you've already taken all the great alley shots, I had to try something else!
sally -- tis a nice pairing of colors, isn't it? I like it -- and sometimes put the two together in my outfits, too.
steve -- Oh, those water holes are long since gone, tho the hills are still leaking water & we have plenty of snow left up at higher elevations to feed the creeks for some little time.
Brain -- if not the little puddles in local alleys, at least those big puddles that we call lakes in these parts.
Good, good.
Now for your next assignment, take a beautiful picture of something ugly.
Or was it an ugly picture of something beautiful? I forget, but the local college displays their submissions for the assignment each year.
Great shots, novel approach. Nicely done, GJ.
Granny J: Thank you for stopping by my blog. I found yours by searching for horned toads. Hope to hear from you again!
pb -- I fear that I'm a journalist, not an artist! My criteria for a`picture are 1) is it interesting and 2) does it tell a story. Oh, yes, I'd vote for a beautiful picture of an ugly thing any day; an ugly picture of a beautiful thing is just downright mean!
tex -- and your pictures from your road trips fit my criteria just peachy keen! ( Aside to readers: check out David's site -- he found a grand chain-saw sculpt of a chicken!)
