Have you tried this market yet?

Any of you readers out there recall what a neighborhood food market is like? In the big city, we had them, of course; many were ethnic specialists. If you were a regular customer, the owner(s) knew you, which was always pleasant! We have such a market here in Prescott, over in the Goodwin Street Plaza, across from the big drug store.

Yes, the offerings are predominantly Mexican, but I've taken care of other needs at Garcia's, as well. A good produce section, BTW, and not just salsa ingredients.

Interesting canned goods -- including one of my favorites, albondigas (meatball) soup.

The variety of juices is excellent -- and unusual. The other day, I tried out the plum nectar. Quite tasty! Another item I bought to treat my sweet tooth looked a lot like penuche fudge, but was a lot smoother -- it was called milk candy and I ate a very large piece in one sitting. Next time, I plan to buy a pumpkin turnover or two -- they looked yummy.

In the restaurant/deli, I bought a batch of deep fried pork chunks & ribs. One meal with salsa and then the pork went German-style in sauerkraut. It was pork that tasted like candy -- the sort of pork one enjoyed in the old days before the health nuts turned it into "the other white meat," tough and dry. Maybe I'll see you in the store one of these days.

Granny J - I was in there a few weeks ago on a "check it out" run. A guy in a Prescott Valley tortilleria said it was a great place for "Carne Asada style" meat. I was impressed and will be back. Meet you for lunch?

Some good Mexican food would go good right now. The wind has calmed.

This looks great. I'll have to try it in a few weeks when I'm in Prescott again. Jarritos by the box -- what could be more decadent? By the way, I think that Annalina's, not far from this market on Whiskey Row, is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the entire state.

Drooling....Thanks for the virtual feast! Sure beats my cereal and chai tea! LOL

I'll be sure to make a shopping trip there during my next visit.

Yum! Do they have fresh masa to make tortillas?

melanie -- I'm not absolutely sure, but I would suspect that they do. Oh, yes, they also have a meat counter with Mexican cuts.

wolfie -- I hope that more people discover Garcias; I'd hate to lose such a fine local business.

Regarding mole at Annalina's -- I don't remember seeing it on the menu; I'll comment again if I notice it on my next visit. Regardless, there are a lot of goo, authentic dishes that you don't see on a typical chain restaurant menu: sopes, rajas, albondigas soup, etc. It's all good.

david -- OK, already, I'll give Annalina's a try, for sure!

I like Annalina's food, but the last 2 times I was in there the service left a lot to be desired.

tombo -- that's what happens when a place gets popular too fast...
