Well, actually, it was a general store -- groceries and mining supplies -- long before it became a must-stop-at cafe and saloon on the road north from Phoenix. The web site for the Rock Springs Cafe explains that Rock Springs, a couple of miles north from Black Canyon City, became a stage stop back in 18-aught-84 and that the store began operation under a canvas roof in 1920. The main structure, which included 6 hotel rooms, was completed in 1924.
Arizona-style tschotckes are sold at this side stand.
Love those classic covered sidewalks found in the old west; it's one way to guarantee shade in the hot desert. And how about that classic coin-op motor car (below)...
Inside -- dark wood (of course) ...
... and the ever-present rack.
Of course, what the Sson and I had come for was a piece of pie; we were on our way back to Prescott from The Valley. All out of rhubarb, so I settled for a yummy lemon meringue; as usual, he chose the Jack Daniels pecan pie. For a complete list of pies, go here.

We'll have to visit there next time I'm your way.
That's quite an array of pastry listed on the link. I noted. with interest, that the upper crust is a single sheet of pastry, now, our Mom always applyed a woven top crust to most of her fruit pies, that is, of course, labour intensive.

I have lots of fond memories from Rock Springs in the 70's. The place was really jumpin' back then when the Harmons owned it. Mrs. Harmon was always very generous with her food and pies. I understand that her son now lives there part time, running his storage biz right down the street.
Hooray for Rock Springs! I was just there on Saturday but did not have any room left for pie. Bummer.
Pecan pie?? I'm in!
What happens when you put a coin in? Does the motor car run?
I like covered sidewalks. The bucking horse for entertaining kids?
Now I have to go and get pie!
bro -- so which one of us is driving???
style -- when I was young, none of the folks would ever take the Black Canyon Highway up to Prescott, so I never got to know the Rock Springs Cafe back then...
qd -- too bad. Is there another reason, besides pie, to stop there?
kate -- the Sson swears by it.
anil -- I hate to admit that I didn't think to try it out, but then it was mid-afternoon and my stomach was crying for its pie.
jarart -- are you, too, a pie freak?
I almost missed this post. Great tip for a future trip.
~Anon in AV.
Maybe the Pitzthingo will be ready for me to try.

anon av -- by all means, plan to stop at the cafe & enjoy a piece of pie. When you get back to Prescott, you can have another piece of pie at Berry's/
bro -- might be ready by then; doubt if it is suitable for I-17, tho -- would have to take the old Black Canyon road all the way...I know how you love those Arizona mountain back roads.
